Oregon’s Mt. Hood Territory: Highlights And Hidden Treasures

To Portland, Oregon’s east and south, Mt. Hood Territory stretches beyond the iconic peak of Mt. Hood itself. Discover a tapestry of communities as rich as the surrounding landscapes. Whether it’s outdoor adventures in mountain communities, unwinding in the famous Willamette Valley or soaking up the urban buzz of Willamette River cities south of Portland, Mt. Hood Territory offers something for everyone. Here’s a little sneak peek of highlights and hidden treasures throughout the destination.

Being the official end of the Oregon Trail, downtown Oregon City has plenty of interactive museums and heritage homes. But did you know it’s also along the Willamette Water Trail. You can book a guided paddle to Willamette Falls, the second-largest waterfall by volume in the U.S.? Just a few miles away, downtown Milwaukie hosts one of the best farmers markets around and is across the street from the river, making it an ideal location to grab local grub and have a riverfront picnic.

Willamette Valley is known for its award winning wines, and Mt. Hood Territory has no shortage of family owned, boutique wineries where the winemaker may be pouring your glass. But have you heard of its many unique animal farms? Meet friendly camels, emus, guinea pigs, llamas, goats and even “Cowlebrities.”

As Mt. Hood is an obvious highlight, we’ll skip to the hidden treasures. Visit Estacada for over 20 building-scale murals and book a rafting tour with a local guide to experience paddling class III and IV rapids on the Upper Clackamas River.

The options for places to stay in Oregon’s Mt. Hood Territory are as varied as the area itself. Find hotels and motels along the I-5 and I-205 corridor, conveniently close to Portland, tax-free shopping and a short drive to Mt. Hood. You can also find hotels, B&Bs and vacation rentals on Mt. Hood. Or make your way down into the Willamette Valley, where you’ll find fun farm stay opportunities and charming B&Bs and inns.
