Guest brownwho63
Denny, being the cruiser that you are - where would you get lodging in Madison, IN if you were going to spend a couple of nights there? I looked at the town's web site and saw there are park lodgings available. Are these the best? If so, which one? If not, see question one. We're visiting MI next month with local cruisin' friends and might possibly swing southeast to Madison on the return trip. Dunno, though - it looks like a long way from the top of IN to the bottom. Thanks.....Bliss --- In AMERICAN_ROAD@yahoogroups.com, "Denny Gibson" <denny@d...> wrote: > Heck no. We don't have enough corners for everyone. Guest Jennifer
Hi Bill, My husband Pat and I were just through Madison (briefly) on our way down to Nashville. (I just posted a separate link to that trip) We specifically went through Madison to stop at the Madison Fudge Factory - they have the best fudge! MMMMMM...I'd better stop now or I'll be tempted to make a run down there! We also crossed the Ohio River at U.S. 421 and saw some of the boats during the regatta...that was cool. Police had traffic stopped on the bridge for a photographer, and I managed to capture a few photos myself. We were in Madison 2 years ago for a trip with our Corvair club too. When it's cooler this fall, I will have to get down there and spend a full day. Guest Bill Price
What time is that? It's the "World's Longest Yard Sale" August4-7. The 19th Annual "World's Longest Yardsale" The US 127 Corridor Sale started in 1987. It begins at Covington, KY, and runs South to Chattanooga, TN, then switches to the Lookout Mountain Parkway, continuing to Gadsden, AL. The four day sale is now ruled by the first Thursday in August making dates for the 19th annual sale to be August 4-7, 2005. Along the route are many historic sites. A couple of my favorites are the Alvin C York Homeplace,in Pall Mall TN. A couple miles down a very picturesque road from the homestead is the church graveyard where Alvin and most of the York family is buried. Down 127 south to Jamestown, the headquarters for the yard sale, take TN Hwy 52 about 25 miles to the Victorian village of Rugby TN Here's a blurb from their web site:http://www.historicrugby.org/ "Time stands still at Rugby, Tennessee - the restored Victorian village founded in 1880 by British author and social reformer, Thomas Hughes. It was to be a cooperative, class-free, agricultural community for younger sons of English gentry and others wishing to start life anew in America. At its peak, some 350 people lived in the colony. More than 70 buildings of Victorian design graced the East Tennessee townscape. This would-be Utopia survives today as both a living community and a fascinating historic site, unspoiled by modern development. Twenty original buildings still stand at the southern edge of the Big South Fork National Park, surrounded by rugged river gorges." And in Kentucky stop at Harrodsburg and Fort Harrod. From their web site: http://www.merceronline.com/ Harrodsburg, the county seat of Mercer County, was founded in 1774 by a stalwart band of pioneers led by James Harrod, of Pennsylvania. It was the only "colonial" city and the first permanent English settlement west of the Allegheny mountains. Referred to as the "Birthplace of the West," Harrodsburg has a proud and remarkable heritage. As you can vision beside the yard sale there is a lot to see and do along Hwy 127. See ya on the road Bill Price Lake Chickamauga TN

Guest Denny Gibson
Sorry to say I have no experience spending the night in Madison. I'm familiar with the Broadway from the food and beverage end and know that they have restored rooms available and have often said I'd like to stay there some time. But Madison is one of those places that's so close to home (about an hour if I'm in a hurry) that it's hard to justify renting a bed. Bill P seems more familiar with Madison than I am so maybe he can offer some advice. --Denny P.S., Yep, Indiana is fairly tall but if you do decide to make the swing I'm sure this group could point out plenty of interesting things on the way. > -----Original Message----- > From: brownwho63 [mailto:brownwho63@yahoo.com] > Sent: Sunday, July 24, 2005 9:41 AM > To: AMERICAN_ROAD@yahoogroups.com > Subject: [AMERICAN_ROAD] Re: any suggestions from Cleveland? > > > Denny, being the cruiser that you are - where would you get lodging > in Madison, IN if you were going to spend a couple of nights there? > I looked at the town's web site and saw there are park lodgings > available. Guest Denny Gibson
I see Bill & I crossed in the ether. Like Madison itself, I've never stayed at Clifty Falls but I'm familiar with it and know that it is certainly a beautiful park. I gotta believe it would be a great place to stay. --Denny > -----Original Message----- > From: Bill Price [mailto:hdbillder@bellsouth.net] > Sent: Sunday, July 24, 2005 10:33 AM > To: AMERICAN_ROAD@yahoogroups.com > Subject: [AMERICAN_ROAD] Re: any suggestions from Cleveland? > > > Cliffty Falls Park Lodge is a wonderful place to stayand it's less > than 5 minutes from "downtown" Madison. > Bill Price > Lake Chickamauga TN > --- In AMERICAN_ROAD@yahoogroups.com, "brownwho63" <brownwho63@y...> > wrote: > > Denny, being the cruiser that you are - where would you get lodging > > in Madison, IN if you were going to spend a couple of nights > there? > > I looked at the town's web site and saw there are park lodgings > > available. Guest Geoff Brandy
Did you know that there are two US Route 2's? One in Washington State and One in upstate New York. Does anyone know why? Did they run out of numbers?
Guest Mike Ward
In and around the Phoenix area there have been hundreds of stations close down over the past 2-3 years. I doubt that many were due to rising gas prices but more the mergers of major oil companies. It doesn't make much sense to have a Mobil station across the street from an Exxon station; the same goes for Texaco and Chevron. A few have re-badged themselves as various independent companies but most just close their doors and sit as derelicts. Some of the cities require the property owners to do something with the property/building but they are in the minority. Mike ----- Original Message ----- From: ronilynnj<mailto:ronilynnj@sbcglobal.net> To: <mailto:AMERICAN_ROAD@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Tuesday, July 11, 2006 1:41 PM Subject: [AMERICAN_ROAD] Profusion of closed gas stations in N. Ohio Hi All, We just completed a trek across northern Ohio on US-20 yesterday. A fun drive found some neat sights. Heading west into Cleveland was agonizing as it seemed the lights were timed where we hit almost every one! Made for a slow go. We noticed a large, very large number of gas stations (among many other businesses) that had closed all along the route. Most looked to be recently. We have never seen that many closed stations here in S.E Mich. (one here or there). Is that a local phenomena or is anyone seeing that elsewhere? I had heard that as gas prices were rising some owners said they would close rather than hike the price. It's perplexing.
Guest dgildor
I'm on the midst of a roadtrip along the West Coast on my motorcycle and wondered if anyone had any particular suggestions of things to see, places to eat, etc. along the roads in Oregon and Washington. Thanks. Guest pmiller864@aol.com
There is also a route 2 at least from Cleveland to Toledo in Ohio. Also, called the Jackie Mayer (Miss America) Highway Norma/Ohio
Guest Denny Gibson
re: nashvillle2005 Glad you liked Penn's Store and I know you mention "local chat" but, from the photo, I can't tell if the store was open or not. I hope that chat wasn't only with the cats. Clearly you spent some time at Highbridge. Nice pictures. I'm sure this was a tourist attraction from the day it was built. My great grandparents stopped there on their way to Florida in 1920 and it's still attracting at least a few tourists 85 years later. Granny wrote, "Our first bit of sight seeing worth while was at High Bridge Ky.", and goes on to describe steps that lead both to the river and up to the bridge. A ferry took their Model T and their companions' Overland across the river. The retracing of their trip that my girl friend and I made in 2001 is covered at http://www.dennygibson.com/T2Tampa . (Didn't you just know that a link was coming somewhere?) re: westbaden2005 Wow. That place is really cool. I've heard of it and sort of thought of a visit but those pictures move it up the list a few notches. In another note you (Pat) mentioned the possibility of a group outing there. I'd definitely be interested. --Denny > -----Original Message----- > From: Jennifer [mailto:jabremer66@aol.com] > Sent: Sunday, July 24, 2005 12:40 AM > To: AMERICAN_ROAD@yahoogroups.com > Subject: [AMERICAN_ROAD] New Trips Posted: TN and KY; West Baden > Springs, IN > > > I have finished our trip from 4th of July weekend to Tennessee and > Kentucky: > > http://www.roadtripmemories.com/trips/nashville2005.htm > > Also, I finished last weekend's Corvair club trip to West Baden > Springs: > > http://www.roadtripmemories.com/trips/westbaden2005.htm > > Enjoy! > > Jennifer
Guest Bill Price
Take US26 out of Portland to MT. Hood and stop at the lodge. Great resturant there. Then continue on 26 to US97 at Madras then south on to Bend and you'll find any number of good resturants and great nightlife. Out of Bend you can get on US20 west and go to Sisters or stay on US97 south to Diamond Lake,Crater Lake and Kalamath Falls. I lived in Oregon for a number of years and loved traveling thru central Oregon. There is a lot to see out there. Guest Denny Gibson
Actually they ran out of land. Looks like it gets squeezed out by the Great Lakes in NY and reappears in the MI upper peninsula when things get a little roomier. This may help: http://www.us-highways.com/us2.htm http://www.us-highways.com/ is a great source for this sort of thing. The route that someone mentioned in Ohio is a state route. Guest Bill Price
FYI, The President Madison is a nice place to stay.As are any of the numerous B and B's in Madison's Historic district On the "Hill" you'll find your"normal" motels,Holidy Inn,Hampton Inn Best Western etc.But if you can't get a room at the Broadway I strongly suggest Cliffty Falls State Park Lodge. Guest ken
Bill's advice is very GOOD! Also, If you happen to find yourself on hwy 101 along the coast line of the Pacific Ocean. There is alot of beautiful scenery there. My favorite section was from Florence Or. to the south with the light houses etc., At times the road is very winding & alot of fun to drive on. I drove this route with a semi tractor trailer making deliveries through out the western half of Oregon. I pulled over at several places so I could walk to the edge of the cliff along the road. My first stop was like Whoa! It was about 700 or more feet straight down to the pounding waves on the rocks below. If there is no misty fog over the water of the ocean, The sunsets are just breath taking, especialy when the sun meets the water on the horizon! As Bill had stated, There is alot to see out there! My advice would be, Don't try to cram everything all on one trip unless you have the time. Just take it easy & enjoy your trip. Besides,......That'll give you another reason for another trip,.....wink, wink....Right? Ha Ha Ha! I'll be headed out that way with my wife & friends within the next two years for another trip! Can't wait! "Happy Trails" Ken, Wi.
Guest rudkip@sbcglobal.net>
I am not real knowlegable in this area but there is a fish place in Seattle called Ivor's (I believe it is on Puget Sound) which, if it is still there is very much worth experiencing...for those out there who have been to Ted Drewe's in St. Louis, in my mind it is the Ted Drewes of fish joints...the fish was good but the experience of watching a bunch of people serve a bunch of people made it even more worthwhile! Guest LilacFloyd@aol.com
Hi Dan Florence was mentioned- I agree, it's beatiful around there. Just past the Heceta Head Lighthouse is a little trail called the Hobbit Trail (you may need to ask a local where exactly) and if you go on it, through some small tree-caverns you get to a great, fairly secluded portion of the beach. There are sand dunes right there to climb on and jump from. Or just chill on the beach. From there, if you head back towards Eugene (East) on 126 for about 20 minutes there's a great trail that goes along waterfalls- they're called Sweet Creek Falls. You can walk up on the trail (which has a few interpretive signs and is a fairly easy hike), then go back through the water. It's a gentle kind of water fall that's very fun to play in and a little challenging to find your way down.(or, of course, you can take the trail back). Basically, from Florence you'll go East on HIghway 126, then make a right onto Sweet Creek Road and follow that road for a little ways until you see the trailhead. There's also good camping around there if you like camping. As you get a little closer to Eugene, there's a small turnoff on the left where you can see the "Pitcher Plant", Darlingtonia Californica. It's an endangered carnivorous plant that looks like a cobra. Definitely worth stopping off to see the lot of them. They've built a small walkway with informational signs on how the plant eats insects. I'd never seen anything like them. I was trying to find more precise directions for you and instead found a spot 5 miles north of Florence on the 101 at at milepost 185.2 This 18 acre area near Florence, Oregon is called the Darlingtonia Botanical Wayside. Eugene itself is only about 45 minutes from Sweet Creek. It's a definite college town with Oregon flair. I love it- spent a summer living there and it was hard to leave. You'll find plenty of good places to eat. And for things to do, just pick up the local what's going on type paper at a grocery store. I also really enjoyed visiting the raptor center there. All sorts of cool birds like Eagles that have been hurt so have to live there now. By the way, Eugene is on the 5 so it might make good road-trip sense to start either on the 101 along the coast then travel east doing all this cool stuff for a day and then continuing up the 5 into Washington, or going the other way, starting on the 5. That way you're only losing a day at most to do some great stuff. I also really liked Koosah waterfall near Sisters. Here's directions I got off a website Directions: Along Hwy #126, 5.7 miles south of junction with Hwy #20 (0.4 miles south of Sahalie Falls). Park in the well-signed turnoff for Koosah Falls at Ice Cap Campground. Basically, it's East of Eugene about an hour and a half I think. These aren't the kind of falls you can swim in! They're absolutely breathtaking. In Washington, visit Mt. St. Helens. Personally, I didn't make it up to the crater. Instead, I went for a hike at the bottom of it that was wonderful. They have 3 different difficulty levels. The hard one I did and it really isn't that difficult, just a little scary on small ledges. The best part was that pretty far along the trail there is a 40 foot ladder down a cliff face. Scary! It's gorgeous here! The eruption years ago cut a very deep ravine (about 200 feet I think???) that water now flows through- more amazing waterfalls. Hope this helps. Have a fun trip! -----Original Message----- From: dgildor <radicaladventure@gmail.com> To: AMERICAN_ROAD@yahoogroups.com Sent: Sun, 24 Jul 2005 17:01:56 -0000 Subject: [AMERICAN_ROAD] Suggestions in Oregon and Washington? Guest Fred Zander
Denny great pictures are u from this part of Ohio? My sister lives in New Knoxville. So yesterday, on a visit "home", I followed the "Land of the Cross-Tipped Churches Byway". Despite growing up within 30 miles of the place, this was my first visit to the convent at Maria Stein and my first view (I'm not Catholic) of a collection of religious relics of any size. Forty miles of flat Ohio farm land do not make for the most scenic drive but I did grab some pictures. Guest R. Droz
US routes can be broken by a very short list of things. 1) Large bodies of water (Examples: US 9, US 10) 2) Canada (US 2) As the most northernmost route, this could have been US 0, but there was 3) Yellowstone NP (Examples: US 20, US 287) 4) The Pennsylvania mystery zone (US 422) In the original 1926 planning, many US routes were incomplete, such as US 19 and US 50. -- ___________________________________________________________ Happy Motoring! _._._._.____~__ Robert V.
